International Day of the Girl: Inspiring quotes by strong women to share with your daughter (or son)

Today is International Day of the Girl, as decreed by the United Nations. Although we’ve come a long way in closing the gender gap over recent years, there is still a lot to be done both at home and internationally to address the unique struggles that girls and young women will face.

The below statistics highlight just how much gender inequality still exists:

• Two thirds of the 774 million illiterate people in the world are female
• This year, 12 million girls under 18 will be married and 21 million girls aged 15-19 will become pregnant in developing countries.
• Globally, the gender pay gap sits at 20%
• 64% of women work compared to 94% - closing this gap would add $28 trillion to the global GDP by 2025
• More than 90% of teenage girls have said they wish they could alter the way they look

You can learn more about the work that the UN and Unicef do here.

However, the most important thing we can do to challenge gender inequality is to start at home with our own daughters, giving them the confidence to believe in themselves and achieve their dreams, as well as teaching our sons to champion them along the way, with the hope that they will, in turn, pass it on to their own future children.

So, take a look at our favourite inspirational quotes from strong and successful women – treasure the words and share them with the girls and boys in your life.
